The ATHENA® Award was established in 1982 and has expanded from one award in one community to an international force for change. Over the past 22 years, 4,500 women have received this award in the U.S., Canada, China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates, inspiring women to achieve their leadership potential. The award takes the form of a hand-cast bronze sculpture symbolozing the strength, courage and wisdom of the recipient(s). View local ATHENA® Award recipients.
This international award recognizes individuals who
- demonstrate excellence in their business or profession
- devote time and energy to the community in a meaningful way
- and generously assist women in attaining their full leadership potential
The spirit of the ATHENA® Award Program is captured in a quotation from Plato, "What is honored in a country will be cultivated there". By honoring exceptional leaders, others will be encouraged to excel. Local recipients join thousands of recipients world-wide as part of an international network of leaders, part of a force with a strong voice in setting new standards of leadership practice.
The ATHENA® Award Program is nationally underwritten by the Oldsmobile and Pontiac GMC Divisions of General Motors, and National City Bank. Local sponsorship is provided by Southaven Pontiac Buick GMC.
