Op-Ed: Why Strong Human Resources Matter to Southaven’s Business Community

Why Strong Human Resources Matter to Southaven’s Business Community

By Debbie King, Southaven Chamber President & CEO

As President & CEO of the Southaven Chamber of Commerce, I hear the same concern from employers again and again: managing people has never been more complex. From compliance and hiring challenges to retention and workplace culture, human resources is no longer a back-office function—it is a core driver of business success.

That is why the Southaven Human Resource Association (SHRA) is so important to our local business community.

Many small and mid-sized businesses do not have a dedicated HR department, yet they are expected to navigate ever-changing labor laws, workforce expectations, and competitive hiring markets. SHRA was created to meet that need by providing education, guidance, and a collaborative space for employers and HR professionals to learn from one another.

Through SHRA, employers gain access to practical training on issues such as employee handbooks, conflict resolution, leadership development, benefits, and legal compliance. Just as importantly, members benefit from expert insight through our Legal Liaison, ensuring they stay informed on critical employment law updates that directly affect their businesses.

But effective human resources go far beyond hiring and compliance. Strong HR practices help build workplace cultures where employees feel valued, supported, and engaged. When businesses invest in leadership development, clear communication, and employee well-being, they see lower turnover, stronger productivity, and improved morale. These outcomes don’t just help individual companies, they strengthen our entire local economy.

SHRA also fosters meaningful connections. By bringing together business owners, managers, and HR professionals from across industries, the association creates a network where challenges are shared, solutions are discussed, and recruitment pipelines are strengthened. That collaboration saves time, reduces risk, and helps employers make better decisions for their teams.

In today’s competitive environment, businesses that prioritize human resources are better positioned to grow and adapt. I believe SHRA plays a vital role in helping Southaven employers build strong teams, develop future leaders, and create workplaces where people want to stay and succeed.

When we invest in better HR practices, we invest in stronger businesses, and a stronger Southaven.
