Southaven Chamber of Commerce Legislative & Public Policy Agenda

Purpose

The Southaven Chamber of Commerce Legislative & Public Policy Agenda establishes the Chamber’s advocacy priorities on issues impacting the Southaven and DeSoto County business community. The agenda guides the Chamber’s nonpartisan advocacy efforts and ensures alignment with the Chamber’s mission, strategic plan, and board-approved governance policies.

•Promote a competitive and sustainable business climate

•Support economic growth, workforce readiness, and quality of life

•Encourage collaboration between business, government, and education

•Advocate for practical, business-focused public policy solutions

 

Advocacy Priorities

Economic Development & Business Growth

•Support policies and incentives that attract and retain employers in Southaven and DeSoto County

•Advocate for redevelopment and commercial investment along key corridors

•Promote streamlined local permitting and development processes

Workforce Development & Education

•Support career and technical education, apprenticeships, and employer-driven training programs

•Advocate for strong partnerships among businesses, school districts, community colleges, and workforce agencies

•Encourage policies that address workforce shortages and talent retention

Taxation & Regulatory Environment

•Support a fair, predictable, and competitive tax structure

•Oppose unfunded mandates and excessive fees impacting local businesses

•Encourage reasonable regulations that protect public interests while supporting business growth

Public Safety & Quality of Life

•Support initiatives that enhance public safety and emergency services

•Advocate for community investments that improve livability and workforce attraction

 

Development, Approval & Oversight

This agenda is developed with input from Chamber members, committees, and staff and is reviewed and approved annually by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The Board provides oversight of advocacy efforts and evaluates outcomes to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

Implementation

The Southaven Chamber of Commerce advances this agenda through communication with elected officials, coalition building, member engagement, and timely calls to action when issues affect the business community
